Council of Trustees elects new officers

The Council of Trustees of the Diocese of Kansas elected new officers at the council’s November meeting and retreat. Dr. Beth Fitz Gibbon of St. Paul’s, Leavenworth was elected as the new President. The Rev. Helen Hoch from Calvary, Yates Center was elected clerk, and Teresa Ryther of St. Stephen’s, Wichita was elected Assistant Clerk.

A Christmas Eve Reflection

When I first held my newborn son, I looked at him with wonder. Gazing down at him in my arms I thought how precious and innocent he was, and I wanted to protect him forever. What would he be like as an adult? What would be his hopes and dreams? Would he be healthy and happy? And I prayed one simple prayer for him: that he grow to be a man who was capable of both giving and receiving love. I suppose most young mothers wonder about these things for their children; I suppose Mary did too on that first Christmas so long ago.

Holy doorways

The place of Jesus’ birth in Israel has been protected since the first century. Walls and walls surround the small cave entrance where pilgrims wait in lines to spend a moment or two of appreciation.

Bethlehem itself sits inside Palestinian territory not far from the wall blockading Jerusalem. The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem looks more like a fortress than a holy place. Sheer walls of white marble reach up many stories tall. The door to enter is called the Door of Humility.
