Clergy of the Diocese Gather for Chrism Mass

by Chad Senuta

Each year the clergy of the diocese gather on the Tuesday of Holy Week for the Chrism Mass. The service is an opportunity for the deacons and priests to strengthen their ministries, fellowship with one another, and renew their ordination vows. The liturgy derives its name from the practice of blessing and distributing oils of Chrism and Unction which are then taken and used by the clergy in their congregations.

The liturgy had traditionally been celebrated at Grace Cathedral in Topeka. Then in 2023, the service was held at St. John’s, Wichita to honor Wichita’s “mother church.” For 2024 it was decided to hold the Chrism Mass at St. John’s, Parsons to honor how much travel those in the Southeast do to participate in the diocese.

While Chrism Mass attendance is required for the clergy of the diocese, all Episcopalians are welcome to attend. Bishop Cathleen Bascom stated, “The Chrism Mass is such a blessed event in the life of our diocese. It is a special time when the clergy gather to support one another, reaffirm our ordination vows, and prepare ourselves spiritually for Holy Week. It is a gift to us, and we hope more and more Episcopalians in the diocese will come and experience this unique liturgy.” The bishop also shared her gratitude to Dean Sharon Billman and the people of St. John’s, Parsons for sharing their hospitality and liturgical gifts with the diocese.
