Safe Church Guidelines

Commitment to safety for all

The Episcopal Diocese of Kansas is committed to providing a safe place for all people to share in God’s love and celebrate the joy of following in the teachings of Jesus Christ.

The diocese’s Safe Church policy (effective January 1, 2019), describing how we carry out this commitment, is available as a PDF document which you can view or download below.

Training Requirements

To be set-up to take online Safe Church training, send an e-mail to Michael Funston, mfunston@episcopal-ks.org. Include your name, email, parish, and role.

In-Person Trainings

While in-person training will require more time for an individual than the online training, it may be a more efficient way for parish, minster, and convocation leaders to ensure policy requirements are met. In-person training is offered in two parts totaling about 6 hours: Universal Training (3 hours) and Leader Training (3 hours). More information on the content of Universal and Leader Training can be learned in the Policy and Requirements documents above.

The Diocese currently has three people certified to offer in-person training sessions. Contact them directly to schedule an in-person training.

Allegations of misconduct

If you wish to report allegations of misconduct by a member of the clergy, the first step it to contact the diocese’s Intake Officer, Mike Morrow, by email or at (316) 258-4834.

The primary responsibility of the Intake Officer is to obtain as much information as possible about the alleged misconduct, short of a full investigation.

The entire process regarding handling of allegations of clergy misconduct is described on the Title IV website.

If you wish to report allegations of misconduct by a lay person, please contact the diocese’s Canon to the Ordinary, the Rev. Patrick Funston, by email or at (785) 235-9255.
