Events mean a busy summer
for Kansas youth
Between camp, MissionPalooza and E.Y.E., youth in the Diocese of Kansas filled their summer months with activities that stressed faith and fellowship.
Church camp: Weather woes couldn't dampen the enthusiasm of more than 200 youngsters during three weeks of camp in June. To read more, click here.
MissionPalooza: Nearly 90 teenagers from the dioceses of Kansas and West Missouri spent five days working in social service agencies in Kansas City, Mo. They also explored the intersection of faith and action. To read more, click here.
Episcopal Youth Event: The Diocese of Kansas sent 12 youth, three adult chaperones and Bishop Wolfe to Berea College in Kentucky in July for the national youth gathering that takes place every three years. They were among more than 1,400 people at E.Y.E. To read more, click here.

Newly-ordained deacon dies after battle with cancer
The Rev. Rick Hoecker, who graduated in May from the School of Theology at the University of the South and was ordained a deacon in June, died July 28 after a two-month battle with cancer.

ESS payee program recognized by the US Treasurry
Tax advice to their payee clients has brought national recognition to Episcopal Social Services of Wichita. Their efforts were recognized as a "model program" by the United States Treasury Department.

Junction City soldier gets presidential visit
Captain Charles Ziegenfuss, a member of the Church of the Covenant in Junction City, received a visit from President George W. Bush while recovering at Walter Reed Army Medical Center from wounds he received while serving in Iraq.

Topeka parish retires its 'Garden of Crosses'
For two years St. David's, Topeka has placed a wooden cross in its churchyard for every American service member killed in Iraq. But with 1,300 already in the ground and more needing to be placed, they ran out of room. Those crosses have been removed, to be replaced by a temporary memorial and ultimately a permanent memorial to those who have lost their lives in the war and to the parish's "garden of crosses" project.

Brother Roger. the founder of the Taizé monastery, was murdered Aug. 16 during evening worship at the ecumenical monastery in France.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America rejected a proposal that would have allowed the churchthe ordiantion of gay and lesbian people in committed relationships as clergy in the ELCA. The vote took place during its biennial Churchwide Assembly.
